the
moonscape ... that is the Mombasa to Nairobi
highway
HOW SHOCKING IT IS THAT THE MAIN
ROAD ARTERY FROM MOMBASA TO CENTRAL AFRICA CAN BE IN SUCH A STATE
?
Coastweek - -
HASH REPORT - RUN No. 154: A Hash convoy
made it up the moonscape that is the Mombasa to Nairobi highway
approaching Mazeras.
Anyone and everyone who has experienced it says how shocking
it is that the main road artery from Mombasa to Central Africa can
be in such a state, but, shocking is not the correct term when it
has been like that for so long.
Depressing is more apt, maybe. What is shocking is that
Kenyans grudgingly accept the situation.
|
Anyway, the convoy continued west from the road into
Mwachae Forest, where Hare "Mouth" had set a nice trail
through the cool and silent arboreal paradise.
Up and down he took us - then up and down again - then
up and up only it seemed.
The checks were well laid and sent the front runners
down enticing slopes, only having to climb back up.
The return to the hilltop beginning was welcome.

It made me so tired that I cannot think of anything more to

HASH - RUN No.
153:
A motley bunch of regulars, returnees and virgins turned up
at Shane Punjab Restaurant down in Diani for Run No. 153.
|
Despite the rigours of crossing the ferry (Soon to be
by-passed by a beautiful new road - oh yeah !
They have been saying that for the last 20years
!
Is that an Anglo-Leasing contract ?) the pack managed
to get to the venue more or less on time at 4.00 p.m.

Now this is strange, given that, normally, they cannot make
it to Nyali before 5.30 p.m.
Anyway, the trail was fairly straight forward, meaning really
straight along the tarmac, although Emily and Maria persuaded the GM
to follow them on a long false check, for which they later
suffered.
We eventually reached a hold at the beautiful Kongo Mosque
beach, where Mariam accused the GM of taking a short
cut.
 |
|
I reminded her that I did not get where I am today by
sheepishly following the trail.
The way the west was won was by using your initiative
and forging your own trail.
Of course, by doing this you can also stumble into a
ravine or a den of thieves but we are not afraid cos' we have
guns, and bullets two (or is it too ?). |
Sorry I digress, and anyway, the GM is inviolate and cannot
be challenged in this way by mere normal people.
So, the trail took off along the beach, before returning to
Shane Punjab Restaurant for the circle.
And anyone who imagined that they saw Quickie and the GM take
a White Cap on the way and then travel by matatu to the circle must
have been dreaming - right ?
Hares, returners, virgins and sinners were all punished and/
or rewarded with down downs, and there were christenings for Brian
and Shazaad.
Their new names cannot be repeated in this journal.
If you want to find out what they are then come along to the
next run.
